Selecting The Right Fishing Line

Synthetic fishing line has given today's fishermen a wider selection than ever before. Today there is a fishing line for just about every angling situation imaginable.

Mono filament Fishing Line The low cost, ease of casting, near invisibility, and strength to diameter size, make monofilament fishing line the choice of spin-casting, spinning, and many bait-casting fisherman.

The quality of mono fishing line can greatly differ. Premium monofilament fishing line has a constant diameter and is very durable. At the other end of the spectrum, cheap monofilament fishing line can have thin spots and weaken quickly.

There are many types of monofilament fishing line. Fisherman who use plastic worms or jigs often favor highly visible or fluorescent mono filament fishing line.

Those who fish around rocks and other rough areas prefer abrasion-resistant mono. Anglers who like to use live bait prefer a thin, flexible fishing line for natural presentations. Braided Fishing Line For catching hard-mouthed fish like northern pike, braided fishing lines are a good choice. fishing line

Made of Dacron or nylon, these lines stretch very little. Braided fishing lines are very good for using on bait-casting reels. Fly Lines There are 4 basic fly lines for fly fisherman to choose from:

Level fly fishing line is the same diameter over its whole length. Although an all-purpose fly line, it is not widely used. Double Taper fly fishing line is level in the middle but tapers at both ends.

It is good for delicate fly presentation and can prove to be economical as well. If one end wears out, the double taper fishing line can be reversed.

Another alternative is to cut it in half and get two identical lines. Weight Forward fly line has a thick, short belly just behind the tapered front end.

The back end is level line. This extra weight in the front end of the line is good for long casts or punching into a wind. Shooting Head fly line is similar to weight forward fly fishing line.

The back portion of this line is monofilament, and helps in creating the farthest casts. Shooting head fly lines are made to sink, but most fly lines are designed to float.

Fly lines are designated by weight, with #2 being the lightest and #11 the heaviest. The proper weight fly fishing line must be matched to the proper fly rod for best performance. Special Purpose Fishing Line For deep trolling, monel wire lines work very well.

For something that does not sink as deep and is more flexible, lead-core lines could be used. Whatever type of fishing you want to do, choosing the right fishing line is extremely important for achieving the best results.

Below we have listed a few of the more popular types of fly fishing line for you to look at.
